From December 7th-9th the Varsity Men's Basketball team participated in the Van Horn Classic!
They opened play with a 82-35 win over Presidio JV. In that game #10 Ben Story led the way on offense with 22 points while #30 Hector Perez contributed 16 points and #32 Noah Ayala had 10 points. Story added 6 steals while Ayala completed a double-double with 11 rebounds.
The Warriors had two games on December 8th, the first against the Marfa Shorthorns. Story once again led the team offensively with 20 points off of 5 steals. Ayala poured in 11 points of his own while #11 Josiah Johnson added 10 points and 8 rebounds. They would defeat the Shorthorns by a score of 71-36. Later that evening, the Warriors faced the Lobos from Academia Juarez in Colonia Juarez, Mexico, defeating them by a score of 67-45. Hector Perez had an incredible scoring night, scoring 27 points off of 4 three-pointers, adding 4 steals and 9 assists to his stat sheet. Ben Story contributed 17 points. Johnson led the team in rebounds with 11 while Ayala had 9 rebounds of his own.
These three wins set the Warriors up for a matchup against the hometown Van Horn Eagles. A tough shooting night would cause the Warriors to go down 18-20 at halftime to the Eagles. However, coming out of halftime the Warriors held the Eagles to 2 points in the 3rd quarter, and 6 points in the 4th quarter, while they went on to score a 36 points in the 2nd half to catapult themselves to a 54-28 win. Story completed his big weekend with 22 points in the championship while Perez had 13 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Noah Ayala also contributed 13 rebounds in the contest. Perez and Acuna played excellent defense earning 7 and 5 steals respectively.
This is the first time the Warriors have won the Van Horn Classic! Congratulations to our Varsity Men's Basketball team! Johnson, Ayala, Story, and Acuna were all named to the All-Tournament team while Perez was named Tournament MVP!
This week they will face the Lydia Patterson Lions in Downtown El Paso before facing Fabens in the first round of the Anthony Basketball Tournament!
