Immanuel Christian's Varsity Volleyball team opened its 2025 season at the Kawliga Classic, hosted by Ysleta High School.
Pool Play – Thursday, August 14
Match 1: Parkland 2, Immanuel Christian 1
The Warriors started strong in their tournament opener against the Parkland Matadors, taking the first set 25-21 behind steady play at the net. Parkland responded with energy in the next two frames, handing ICS a 25-21, 14-25, 12-25 defeat.
Junior Carla Sousa-Travieso led all attackers with 11 kills and 3 service aces, while senior Lucia Munoz chipped in 5 kills and an ace. Senior Yareli Lopez added 4 kills, and sophomore Lilia Ramirez set the tone with 16 assists and a team-high 7 digs. Defensively, sophomore Addison Kern anchored the back row with 10 digs and 15 receptions, while Lopez and Sousa-Travieso combined for 29 receptions.
Match 2: Ysleta 2, Immanuel Christian 0
In their second pool play contest, the Warriors squared off against the host school, Ysleta Indians. Despite moments of grit, ICS fell 13-25, 7-25 against a strong Ysleta squad.
Sousa-Travieso once again paced the offense, finishing with 3 kills and 3 digs. Sophomore Jade Garcia added 2 kills and a block, while Lopez contributed 2 kills and 5 digs. Ramirez handed out 7 assists and added a pair of digs on the defensive side. Kern and Sousa-Travieso each recorded double-digit receptions, combining for 25 in serve receive.
Pool Play – Friday, August 15
Match 3: Immanuel Christian 2, Bel Air 0
The Warriors bounced back on Friday morning with an impressive straight-set win over the Bel Air Highlanders, 25-22, 25-22, showcasing resilience and strong all-around play.
Sophomore Jade Garcia had a breakout performance, leading the team with 8 kills while hitting .350. Sousa-Travieso added 6 kills, and Munoz chipped in 3 kills while hitting at a 42.9% efficiency. Lopez also contributed 4 kills and 6 digs.
Ramirez set the pace with 19 assists, while Kern delivered 8 digs and 7 receptions. Sousa-Travieso was a defensive anchor with a match-high 16 digs to go along with 13 receptions. The Warriors were also sharp at the service line, totaling 7 aces—Kern and Sousa-Travieso each accounting for 3.
Match 4: Immanuel Christian 2, Lydia Patterson 0
Closing out pool play, the Warriors delivered a dominant performance in a sweep of the Lydia Patterson Lions, 25-10, 25-13. ICS controlled the match from start to finish with efficient attacking and aggressive serving.
Munoz and Lopez led the way offensively, tallying 5 kills and 3 kills respectively, while Garcia added 3 kills on just 5 swings for a .400 hitting percentage. Sophomore Valeria Escobar chipped in 2 kills, and Ramirez contributed across the board with a kill, 9 assists, and 2 aces.
Munoz also stood out from the service line, racking up 4 aces on 14 attempts, while Ramirez added 2 aces of her own. The Warriors totaled 13 aces in the match, with nearly every rotation contributing.
Defensively, Kern and Lopez each tallied 4 digs, while Escobar and Sousa-Travieso combined for 5. Serve receive was steady throughout, with Lopez leading the backcourt at 7 receptions.
The Lions struggled to find answers as ICS used a fast start and consistent execution to secure their second consecutive sweep and build momentum heading into bracket play.
Bracket Play – Saturday, August 16
Match 5: Bel Air 2, Immanuel Christian 1
Seeded fourth out of pool play with a 2-2 record, the Warriors drew a rematch with the Bel Air Highlanders in the opening round of bracket play. The two teams traded momentum in a hard-fought match, but Bel Air held off ICS 26-24, 23-25, 17-15 in a three-set thriller.
Munoz provided steady offense with 6 kills, while Garcia (5), Lopez (5), and Sousa-Travieso (4) kept the attack balanced. Ramirez dished out 15 assists to go along with 9 digs, while Sousa-Travieso also added 9 digs and a team-high 15 receptions.
Kern had another strong defensive outing with 7 digs and 20 receptions, while Lopez chipped in 5 digs and 15 receptions. From the service line, ICS collected 9 aces, led by Sousa-Travieso's 3 and Garcia's 2.
